LED bulbs with blue leds are on the way, and prices are falling fast. You can get them for less than $10.
This is a long and hard LED road. The first is the red color of the power indicator used for decades in stereo or electrical appliances. Then green and yellow, but the researchers couldn't find a way to do it in blue - up to akasaka sakasaka, hiroko and nakamura.
Colin Humphreys, LED researcher at Cambridge university in the UK, said: "they get gallium nitride, which is blue and they are already online." Akasaki, Amano and Nakamura coax gallium nitride to emit bright blue. Industrial researchers added a layer of phosphorus to the blue light and formed a brilliant white light.
After two decades of careful adjustment, leds are becoming more and more popular as the light source for homes and lamps. Leds even light up the laptop's screen.
"It's important because the science they do is very useful science," humphrys says. The new LED lights are about seven times higher than traditional bulbs and double the compact fluorescent bulbs. That means big energy savings.
"It's just huge -- we can close or not build more than 500 large power stations around the world,
"If everyone USES LED bulbs, Humphreys says.
So Nobel is official. Leds are great planets and your wallet. But there's another question: which leds should you buy?
Rensselaer polytechnic institute, director of the intelligent lighting engineering research center, Bob Karlicek said: "oh, just, this is a very thorny problem, you can answer these days and all the different kinds of light bulbs on the market."
'there are two things to look for,' he said. First, you need to consider something called "color temperature".
It describes the type of lamp the bulb produces.
"I want to look at the warm white light bulbs, which means they should have a color temperature of 2,700 kelvin," he said.
Another big attribute is brightness. The LED is measured in a lumen manner, with an 800-900 lumen equal to the brightness of a conventional 60-watt bulb.
